Necessity of Filter capacitors in electronic circuits

Are you wondering why there are so many capacitors scattered throughout the electronic board? What exactly is their purpose? Often, even the Top Engineering colleges India might skip explaining such simple concepts so we’re here to help. Here, in this article we will cover every detail from what is a filter capacitor to its uses and importance in an electrical circuit. Firstly what is meant by filter capacitor? A filter capacitor is an electronic device that diminishes the voltage and signal ripples from electronic circuits. Capacitors with an ability to absorb and efficiently control the electrical charges at predetermined values are used as filter devices. This feature of the capacitor is basically used in a filter capacitor application is to absorb or monitor the voltage frequencies that exceed the required figure.

A filter capacitor performs various functions in the electric and electronic field. The numbers of applications covered by this device are as follows:

• Filter capacitors are used in almost all sorts of filters that are used in signal processing. It works as a filter in an audio equalizer, which uses several frequency bands so as to allow different amounts of amplification for bass, midrange and high frequency tones.

• It removes Glitches on Direct current (DC) power rails.

• It also helps in the removal of Radio frequency interference (RFI) for signal or power lines entering or leaving equipment smoothly.

• The Filter Capacitors are used to further smooth dc power supplies after a voltage regulator.

• It is also used for Arc suppression, such as across the contact breaker or 'points' in a spark-ignition engine

These filter capacitors are available in many materials from mica capacitors, ceramic capacitors and tantalum capacitors to aluminum electrolytic capacitors, paper capacitors and so forth. Each of the material has its own importance and purpose. Some of the uses of different types of materials are as follows:

• Electrolytic capacitors are mostly used for its high capacity at low cost and low size.

• Ceramic plate capacitors owing to its extremely low inductance and low cost are mostly favoured.

• For the purpose of precision, silver mica capacitors is used. It offers superior precision and stability.

• Plastic film trimmers are basically used for the purpose of manual tuning, though for some time now it is popular to adjust the inductor to achieve tuning.

• Disc and plate ceramic capacitors are usually used owing to its particularly low inductance.

It is very important to know the right positioning of this device for its effectiveness. A filter capacitor is usually placed across a load or connected in a way so as to offer a monitored path to ground. In this placement, the capacitor is able to absorb any voltage above its set parameters in a most effective way.
Now we arrive at a very important question of what is the importance of these filter capacitors in electric circuit. A biggest problem faced by electronic circuit designers is the removal of voltage and signal glitches. It may occur in the form of either DC ripple in power supply outputs, audio interference, or switch induced arcing. These deviations can create havoc however the capacitor's ability to absorb and hold electric charges at a pre set value makes it an ideal filter component to be used in electric circuits.

Laser Diodes, their Application and Study

A laser diode, also known as a diode laser, is a semiconductor device that emits light radiation which is coherent. Laser diodes generate a beam of high intensity light and are also referred to as injection lasers.

Though laser diodes are similar to the light emitting devices (LED), they are different from the other types of lasers, such as Helium-Neon and gas lasers. The weight of laser diodes is typically a fraction of a gram, therefore, they are suitable to be used in portable electronic equipments. Furthermore, the power requirements of laser diodes are very less as compared to the conventional lasers. As the laser diodes consume less power, they can operate even when there is a very little battery power supply. You can also easily switch the laser diodes on and off at high frequencies, due to which laser diodes can be used in high-speed telecommunication applications. Since laser diodes are small in size and made of semiconductor materials, they can be easily used in places where other types of lasers cannot be used.

Due to their continual advancement and developments, laser diodes are today available in shorter wavelengths and can produce an increased output power. Following are some of the different types of laser diodes available:

1.  Surface emitting laser diode: In this kind of laser diode, light emits in a direction that is perpendicular to the wafer surface of the semiconductor chip. This is a new type of laser diode.

2.  High power laser diode: It produces a high intensity power beam and is pretty small in size. The power requirements of high power laser diodes are very less.

3.  Index guided laser diode: It reduces astigmatism in single-mode output beams that it generates.

4.  Gain guided laser: It is the simplest kind of laser diode which uses a mechanism to control the spread of the laser beam.

From data recording and storage to optical fiber communications, high-speed telecommunication, dermatological therapies to remote optical sensing and blood analysis, laser diodes are today used across a wide range of industries.

Considering the wide range of areas that laser diodes can be used in, the study of laser diodes is a sought after course these days.
